The After School Chat
The After School Conversation
Striking up a conversation with your child after school can be a challenge. Many parents find that their questions are shut down the moment the words fall out of their mouth, does this sound familiar?
“How was your day?”
“OK” (include shoulder shrug here)
“What did you learn?”
“Can’t remember”
A technique you may find useful is to learn about your child’s timetable, that way you can ask more targeted questions, for example:
“What did you make in art today?”
“What sport did you play in PE?”
These open questions help to prompt your child’s memory and encourage conversation.
Possibly more important than these questions are questions surrounding socialization as they help to create a picture of how your child is integrating. Questions such as:
“Who did you eat your lunch with today?”
“Who did you play with at lunch time?”
Are there any conversational techniques you have found to be effective? What are some of your favorite after school questions?
