As a parent this is a very scary statistic

Watching your child suffer from stress is one of the hardest things a parent can go through

You feel helpless

You want to do more, to make it all better but often your attempts to help just seem to do more damage than good

It seems that they are just moving more and more away from you and it is a lonely and sad feeling

Today our children have to deal with the hormones, physical changes and emotional headspace but they have the burden of social media, digital devices and the need for immediacy that has become rife in our society

Stress in teens can be caused by illnesses, relationship status of parents, peer pressure, exams, changing schools or homes, family illness or death, friendship or grades in school

These levels of stress can cause serious implications for both your child’s physical and mental wellbeing

Stress attacks the body physically with through inhibiting a number of important body processes including digestion, the immune system, mood, growth, body temperature and sexuality

These symptoms could be experienced by your child as:

  • Tune out in class rather than pay attention;
  • Cut short class preparation time;
  • Settling for lower grades
  • Lose control over emotions
  • Breaking rules
  • Truancy
  • Behavioural problems – cutting class
  • Difficulty getting out of bed
  • Give up on seeking solutions for problems and
  • Withdrawal from social participation

When a child can manage these stressful situations in their life, they are able to get back the real them. They can take control of their physical and mental health and of their life

However, there are things that can be done

Learning how to cope with levels of stress can help your child to become more resilient, be able to overcome challengers more effectively, live a more fulfilling life and maintain a more developed relationships with family and friends
